About Toolshed
What this is, and how it works
The name
A toolshed is where the things you actually use live. Not a showroom, not a warehouse — a small space by the door, arranged by you, where you can put your hand on the right thing without looking.
That is the difference between this and a bookmark folder. A bookmark is something you dropped. A shed is something you keep.
One distinction worth drawing plainly: the shed here is yours — nobody is keeping one on you. And nobody running this service can look inside it.
The problem
New tools arrive faster than anyone can keep track of. You find a good one, bookmark it somewhere, and three weeks later you cannot remember what it was called or which of four browsers you saved it in. Bookmark folders do not help, because the useful question is never "when did I find this" — it is "what do I use for writing?"
What Toolshed does
You paste a link, and the name, description and logo are fetched automatically so you are not filling in a form. You file it under what it is for — and a tool can sit in several categories at once, because most genuinely do. Then you can find it again.
You can add your own notes: why you saved it, what it is good at, what it costs, where it disappointed you. That is usually the part worth having six months later.
How it is organised
- Your library is private. Categories are the primary grouping, and the tools inside them stay compact so a page of them is still readable.
- The directory at /discover is a curated, public list of tools worth knowing about. Anything there can be added to your own shed in one click — as your own copy, which you can then edit freely.
- Kits at /kits are curated sets for a particular kind of work, with prompts and guidance for using them.
On privacy
Your library is yours. We do not sell data, we do not run third-party tracking scripts, and sponsorship in the directory is matched to the page being viewed rather than to you.
One thing worth stating plainly: no administrator of this service can read your library. Not "we promise not to" — the capability is not in the software. Administrators curate the public directory, which belongs to nobody. Your shed is not reachable from there.
You can export everything as JSON, or delete your account outright, from your account page. Deletion is immediate and permanent.
What it is not
It is not a review site, a ranking, or an affiliate directory. Descriptions are our own short summaries. Inclusion is not an endorsement. If a tool is missing, that usually means nobody has added it yet.
